Now is the Joker’s turn, although his past is handled entirely with dialogue, not flashbacks. The actors are all excellent. The Dark Knight is two and a half hours long, but it never meanders off track; instead it is packed to the brim with action, ideas, well-drawn character moments and surprisingly effective drama.

The film features outstanding acting, breathtaking art direction, fascinating royal intrigue, memorable action sequences, and surprising depth. It’s that depth of character and storyline that makes the film shine.

After a folktale-like prologue that recounts the history of the fictional African nation of Wakanda, Black Panther opens with a flashback to 1992, when a younger T’Chaka (Atanda Kani) makes a surprise visit to Oakland, California, to confront a rogue Wakandan spy. Back in the present, T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) is preparing for his coronation day, which includes a potential challenge – through ritual combat – from any of Wakanda’s 5 tribes, as well as a sacred ceremony in which he officially becomes the nation’s Black Panther. In order to save his life and escape, he constructs a high-tech armored suit and escapes, upending his captors. Once he manages to escape, he returns to America and uses it to combat crime and terrorism.

The film is light and bright and the special effects are impressively crafty. But Robert Downey Jr.’s work is what makes this film more than a run-of-the-mill superhero film. His work here is funny, human, heroic and completely engaging. He gives both Stark and Iron Man a little swagger and coolness which are a refreshing change from the nerdy or stiff origin stories of the preceding heroes.
